Our first instinct when injured is to get away from the accident, and away from any further potential danger, as quickly as possible. Despite this instinct to flee there are things that you can do at the scene which will greatly help if you decide to make a personal injury claim later on. But remember, your personal safety always comes first. If you must leave the scene, contact a lawyer and return as soon as possible or ask a friend to go back for you so they can follow these steps
1) Take as many photographs of the scene as possible, both wide angle, with the whole scene in one picture, and close up. The photographs may include, pictures of holes and cracks in the road, skid marks, defective items, puddles of liquids, and pictures of your injury also. It is often a good idea to use a ruler to give an idea of scale. Common items can also be used if you don’t have a ruler, such as paper notes, a wallet or purse or even your hand.
2) Getting the contact details of any witnesses to the accident will mean you will be able to find people that can confirm your version of events.
3) Finding out if there has been a similar accident and if the person responsible was aware of it. It will greatly help your claim if that person knew of the accident risk but took no steps to prevent it happening again.
4) If the accident happens at work or in shop or public place then report it to the manager and make sure they put it in the accident book.
5) Get the details of any police officers who attended the accident. The likelihood is that they will contact you after the accident to get a statement so this can be done then, but it is better to do so at the scene.
6) In a road traffic accident you should always get the name, address and insurance details of all the drivers involved in the accident. You should also write down the make, model and registration of the cars involved as this can be indispensable when tracking down drivers that have given you false information.
7) Seeking medical attention directly after an accident is essential as our body’s natural reaction to injury masks some pains such as whiplash. So even if you feel fine, go to see a doctor.
